Original vs No Added Sugar – Which Kaya Jar Fits?
Updated: Sep 14
Two jars, the same origin: Monkey Jam Foods offers kaya as Original and as a no added sugar version. Both come from Singapore, both contain egg, and both are creamy coconut-pandan spreads. The difference sits mainly in sweetness — and in whether sugar has been added.
This is not a health decision or a race for labels. It is about the taste you want on the breakfast table.
Original
Original leans into the classic, sweeter direction. If you like kaya toast the way many kopitiams serve it — clearly sweet, creamy, with pandan and coconut — this is often where people start. On warm toast with cold salted butter, the sweetness feels rounded rather than sharp.
No added sugar
No added sugar follows the same idea, just without added sugar. Naturally occurring sugar is still present. The spread stays creamy and carries pandan and coconut; the sweetness feels more restrained. If you want to avoid added sugar, this is the jar — without assuming “no added sugar” means the same as sugar-free.
How to choose
Want the sweeter classic? Original makes sense. Want the same character with less added sugar? Choose no added sugar. Both belong in the fridge after opening.
